Siskiyou Community Health Center is seeking two full-time Dental Assistants in Grants Pass. The job description is below, but let us start with the things that matter most to you:

POSITION SUMMARY:  The Dental Assistant (DA) helps ensure quality care and efficient patient flow through clinic by processing and placing patients in examination rooms, and preparing patients for examination by Dentist and/or Hygienist. Assists dental practitioners during examinations and operative procedures. Performs operative procedures in accordance with clinic and federal protocols. Maintains clinical areas in a state of readiness for patient care. DAs may be asked to cover at another clinic.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Knows and follows all clinical protocols, including charting and other paperwork. Demonstrates interest and initiative towards safety issues to ensure patient, personal, and staff safety.
  • Places patient in examination room and prepares for examination by dental practitioner by taking vital signs, completing patient interview regarding reason for visit, updating information, and preparing chart for examination.
  • Alerts Dentist when patient presents with possible emergency or immediate medical or dental need.
  • Assists dental practitioners with dental examinations and operative procedures as requested. Mixes alloys and filling materials within scope of training and in accordance with clinic protocols.
  • Administers dental treatments as directed by dental practitioners, within scope of training, and in accordance with clinic protocols.
  • Prepares patient for tests and procedures by instructing patient and preparing for procedures. Provides health and dental education materials as directed by dental practitioners.
  • Performs dental laboratory processes within scope of training, and in accordance with clinic protocols.
  • Takes and develops x-rays when necessary. Demonstrates the ability to do a full mouth x-ray in 10 minutes or less, and an emergent assessment and x-ray within 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Maintains clinical areas in a state of readiness for patient care by stocking and setting­ up rooms for examinations.
  • Assists Patient Service Representatives (PSR) in preparing charts and registering patients as needed.
  • Assists in calling patients to remind of visits and providing pre-visit instructions.
  • Assists in preparing and sending patient correspondence, such as no-show letters, laboratory letters, and follow-up visit reminders.
  • Performs other duties as requested to ensure efficient clinic operations.
  • Assists in maintenance of dental laboratory and x-ray inventory.
  • Proof of current immunizations that meet clinic health and immunization standards required.
  • Pre-employment criminal background check and comprehensive drug screening required.

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, and EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Completion of a Dental Assistant’s training program or a minimum of two years’ experience as a Dental Assistant in a dental office or clinic desired.
  • Current Expanded Function Dental Assistant certification is preferred.
  • Current Oregon X-ray certification is preferred
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification is required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Can demonstrate knowledge of dental terminology, drug dosage information, and medical abbreviations.
  • Familiarity with computerized dental management programs is preferred.
  • Can demonstrate working knowledge of ADA Dental Coding.
  • Can demonstrate general knowledge of Medicare as it relates to dental services, Oregon Health Plan, dental insurance, and dental managed care programs.
  • Can demonstrate general knowledge of office processes and procedures, including computer word processing, data entry, and use of telephone switchboard equipment.
  • Can demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to explain procedures and provide instructions to a variety of patients.
  • Can demonstrate effective customer relations skills, and the ability to work with diverse populations, often in stressful environments.
  • Can demonstrate strong organizational skills and effective use of time, working at a rapid pace and managing multiple tasks.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Lifting, bending, reaching, pushing, carrying, and sitting.
  • Vision and hearing corrected to be within normal range.
  • Physical mobility within clinic.

HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS:

  • Exposure to blood and body fluids.
  • Exposure to infectious diseases and airborne pathogens.
  • Contact with sharp and contaminated instruments and needles.
  • Contact with patients and occasional rude and/or angry encounters.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • 100% office-based.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work required.
  • Periodic state and national travel.

MACHINES, EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, and SUPPLIES USED:

  • Computer, printer, calculator, fax machine, copier, multi-line phone system.
  • Dental trays, dental explorers, probes, dental mirrors, suction hoses, high-volume evacuators, retractors, impression trays, dental dams, air-water syringes, bitewing blocks, sterilization equipment.
  • X-ray and X-ray sensors require radiology certification.
